Give Aways!

Welcome to Blog Give Away Day!
I'm Becka. I am an art teacher. Specifically I teach fiber art. I know, cool huh? I make a lot of samples as I am teaching so my students can see how things work step by step. My Give Away Day prizes are some beautiful projects made as samples in classes I have taught. Pictured are:
- a shibori dyed silk scarf. Fuschia/lime/deep purple.
- two handwoven cuff bracelets made on an inkle loom. One is classy grey/blue stripes, one has a pick up pattern of diamonds that "float" on top. Cotton warps.

This giveaway is open May 27 through May 31. I will draw three winning names at random and announce them first thing on June 1st. All you have to do is leave a comment telling me about your favorite art class project. What did you make? Why was it the best thing ever? (Be sure you leave your email or some way I can contact you so I can mail your prize!)

P.S. I will ship internationally!

I love the inkle loom bracelets. Can you help me get started with Inkle weaving? My neighbor gifted me a loom and I don't know where/how to find out more.

My favorite art class project was years ago at a camp. It was a watercolor class and we worked on sketching and painting -- I made a painting of my (favorite) shoes. I had it hanging on the wall, but the frame broke at some point and I filed it away. My piece was so different than everyone else's -- mostly they painted landscapes.

Ooh, fun giveaway! What did I make... one thing I remember is that we glued layers and layers of small square colored construction paper on top of each other, and sanded the edges until we had hearts (I think). And we glued them onto pins for our mothers for Mother's Day. I don't know why that one sticks in my mind, but it's the only one I can think of!

Your work is beautiful - Yea! Minneapolis craft artists.

My favorite art projects in school:
1) painting with melted crayons. I was in summer school in 1970, and the teacher took a metal muffin tin and placed in on a hot plate, then put unwrapped broken crayons in the little tins. Melted, we painted with q-tips. I'm sure this would be far too dangerous for today's classroom.
2) Ceramics. I loved to make the little animals, paint them with glaze, and see how different they looked when they came back to us after beind fired. I felt so proud to see my work sitting out on a table in our house. I'm a potter now, and I have the little elementary school animals in my studio to keep me humble.
Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

Beautiful projects! My art classes never had projects that cool! I took a class long after I was done with college where we learned to bezel set faceted stones. I learned about how to make assymetry appealing to my symmetry focused engineering brain.

I just had to help my sister with her art class project. They had to pick unusual mediums to form art (no crayons, markers, paint, the usual). We "painted" t shirts using bleach and squirt guns. Then, we decopauged some shoes with scrapbook paper (with distressing liquid) and rub on stickers. They turned out so well she wore the shoes to prom!

One of my favorite art projects is from way, way back to when I was about a 7th grader in country school. We used window screen and stitched a picture. Kind of like using needlepoint plastic canvas now. I chose to stitch a mountain with a sunset and black silhouetted trees on either side - a big project as it was all covered with stitches and about 8" x 10". Loved art then and still do.

Those are so neat! I wish I was crafty enough to make something like that :)

My favorite are class project was making little totem poles out of clay. I can't remember what 2 of the things were, but it was topped off by a flying pig. Getting the wings to stay on was pretty hard, but I figured it out eventually.

My favorite art class project, hands down, was actually when I was very small, at a artsy summer day camp. We each made our own batik fabric (and I cannot even imagine taking this project on, as we ranged in age from about five years to eight years or so), then we used the batik as the cover of a handmade camp journal which we worked on on and off for the rest of the week. Inside we journalled our camp experiences, added pieces of our other artwork, lots of drawings and paintings... As a writer, this was an awesome project, and as a sewer, this was also an awesome project. I'd like to do it again someday! I still have it sitting on my dresser.

My favorite art class project was when I learned to knit as a new mom. After wanting to learn my whole life, I took a class in downtown Lawrence KS (go KU!) and felt so hip and cool as I sat on a vintage couch with a good friend and three new friends and knit a cotton dishcloth. Now it's one of my favorite pastimes.

I love the giveaway! Thank you for it. My favorite art class project was in early high school. We were to use normal hardware items to make something. I think we also had to make an environment or setting for our object. I made a person who had hook hands. Then I crafted a paper mache mountain for the man to rock climb on. I still have the little man, and I love this idea!

My favorite art project was something I did with children in a preschool class, but could be done with children of any age. I cut holes into a box and set up paints and paper inside the box. The children had to paint a picture without seeing the work in progress. Not only was it great fun... tons of giggles, but the pictures turned out beautiful and abstract... something the perfectionist in the group would never have accepted. And, there was really no difference between children with various motor skills.

Your projects being offered are lovely. Thank you for the chance to win.

Such nice bracelets!

The only thing I remember from art class was making a paper mache teenage mutant ninja turtle (michaelangelo), which wasn't all that great. But I'm a science teacher now and I make a point of collaborating with the art teacher as much as possible. We make anatomically correct paper mache insects, recycled art, etc. It's great!

I'm a ceramics tutor so I suppose my favourite art project was that first lump of clay I picked up in college. The project was 'natural containers' and my innocent brain chose shells. I made a series of wonky, badly glazed, huge pots with giant spirals as handles. I still have them in my garden to remind me of the first time I got muddy! :)

How fun to play with art like that all day long. Great job. You had to ask that question too huh?

You're going to make me show my age since back when I was in art class we didn't have the cool stuff being done now. Heck, I can barely recall ANY projects that stand out in my mind as a favorite. Isn't that sad? I think however, probably the most fun I had was when we learned decopauge. That following Christmas I decopauged just about anything that would stand still as gifts for everyone. While cleaning things out after my father died I actually found one of those presents I'd given him that many years ago.

I love those things you are giving away and how cool my favorite color is purple and shades of purple.

Oh there are so many. I was a girl guide as a child so we were always crafting something. But I think one of my favs was when I took a sewing class in highschool. That's when I really feel in love with sewing...I made some placemats that I thought were the greatest thing in the world, at that time at least.

Oh I love your fiber art. It's gorgeous. Thanks for the opportunity to own one.

My favorite art lesson is from a class I took during my teaching certification. In an elementary art class we had to focus on one artist and I choose Faith Ringold. I love how she tells stories through her quilts. So I picked up a brush and painted a picture of me as a child under my favorite tree with my favorite toy...a radio flyer. My then mother in law who has since passed away quilted the piece for me. I loved it so I gave it to my mom as a gift and it hangs in her home.

I just love all your items, especially the bracelets.
I think my favorite art class was during an art camp in Alaska, of all places. I took a ceramics class, and we had an instructor from Mexico, who showed us how to make a ceramic head, and then let us go; we spent two days solid letting our creative juices flow. We glazed and raku-fired them...I still have the piece and am in love with it.

My favorite art project was actually my mother's! In the fifth grade they did free hand stitchery. She outlined her house and the tree out front and put her name and grade at the bottom. At the top in red floss she wrote "Home Sweet Home" and hearts! I found in when we cleaned out my grandmother's house and have had it displayed in my house ever since.

My best art project was an oil painting of Dorothy Hamill I did in High School right after she won the Olympics. My art teacher practically painted it for me, but I was still so proud of it. At the end of the school year she gave me all of the left over paint supplies. I was thrilled. My love of art was a direct result of that teacher!

It's been a long time since I took an art class, but I definitely remember fondly the pottery wheels in middle-school art. Probably the best thing I ever made in art class was the first pot I ever threw (actually a bowl/dish thing)--it wasn't perfect, but I glazed it all experimentally and my parents still use it for the spare change in the kitchen. Hooray for useful!

Wow ... these are beautiful.
When I was in yr 9 I made a sculpture. It was an open theme but the whole class had to use the same medium. The basic four were chicken wire, feathers, recycled plastic bottle and paint.
So I made a garbage bin out of chicken wire and plaster. Sticking out of this was 'rubbish' and the back end of a cat (chicken wire covered in feathers in the shape of a cat). I thought it was awesome but my teacher was kind of the traditional type! Didn't like it.

Truly, I loved making coil pots in art class when I was about 13. My coil pot ended up being a plate that looked like a flower made of coils.
I was a slow worker and never had the time to blend. The glaze ended up deep pink petals and the center turned to a shiny peanut butter colour...I never liked the end product but it was fun.
Mum still uses the plate for her condiments, a decade later.

I love your giveaways! I had never heard of an inkle loom before so I had to do a little research!

My fav class was when we had to do something abstract. I was about 15 I think. I just learned how to write my name in Arabic, and I did that. The teacher didn't know it was actually a language, the art I made, and was over the top with it. Gave me the highest mark ever LOL

My mom is an art teacher, so we did projects at home too :) I love that silk scarf, it makes me think of her.
I always loved working with clay and glazing. The thing that I still love though was a little project I had in design class in college. It was something like make a sign with your name with some kind of objects drawn with colored pencils to form each letter. I still have it hanging in my sewing room. I just felt like it was some of my best drawing. I had little women in different colored dresses forming each letter.

My favorite art project was when I was in college. I was dating a very creative girl and we made a set of mouse hand puppets together, then went on to write short plays for them. Later we got married and spent the first summer together performing for children at Storybook Island in Rapid city, along with our troupe of puppets which we called "Tails for Two".

Gosh, I never took an art class. I took Home Ec classes and taught Home Ec, so maybe those count.

I do remember a time in 6th grade when our teacher gave us all sheets of copper that we embossed with a tool of some sort. She washed them with some sort of chemical that turned them black, then we used something-maybe steel wool--to work all of the black stuff off of everything but the embossed parts. It was fun, and messy, so we got to spend part of each Spring day outside. Which may be why she did it, now that I think about it. ;-)
